Farlin Quigley Ball letters, 1852-1911.

Correspondence of Farlin Quigley Ball (1838-1917) from the time he was a student at the University of Wisconsin through his career as the chief justice of the superior court of Cook County (Ill.). During his last term at UW-Madison, the Civil War broke out and in the summer of 1862 he enlisted with Company G, 31st Infantry Regiment. His Civil War correspondence includes letters to Ball from his brothers Steven Ball (22nd Wisconsin Infantry) and William H. Ball (3rd Independent Wisconsin Light Artillery) as well as letters he received from classmates, many of whom served as officers. These letters document military campaigns, the condition of the army, and difficulties faced by the soldiers and their morale. The letters preceding the war are from other UW students and female acquaintances.
